This is due to the way libproc, a component of procps, handles /proc/#/stat files that are unreadable. This patch gives libproc the ability to gracefully handle such entries. This patch works on procps 1.2.8 and 1.2.9. Howto: 'zcat procps-1.2.9.slp.gz | patch -p1', then compile and install procps normally.
